2.4. Sustainability and AI as Cross-Cutting Themes

💡 First Principle: Neither sustainability nor AI got its own ECO domain or PMBOK® 8 performance domain — both are deliberately woven through existing tasks and principles, because PMI's Job Task Analysis found these considerations already showing up inside everyday decisions, not as a separate practice area.

Sustainability appears as an explicit enabler in multiple places you might not expect: Process task 1's "determine critical information requirements" enabler names sustainability directly; Process task 7 pairs "cost of quality (CoQ) and sustainability"; Business Environment task 2's compliance enabler lists sustainability alongside security and health/safety; Business Environment task 5's risk register enabler calls out "managing sustainability risks." The pattern: sustainability is a lens applied to compliance, risk, quality, and planning decisions — not a checklist item you complete once.

AI shows up more narrowly but concretely: it's named as a consideration when determining "critical information requirements" during integrated planning (Process task 1) — meaning the exam expects you to recognize when AI-assisted forecasting, estimation, or decision support is the right tool to recommend, and just as importantly, when human judgment should override it.

⚠️ Exam Trap: Looking for a dedicated "sustainability" or "AI" section/domain to study in isolation — if a scenario mentions either, it's almost always testing whether you noticed it as a factor inside a Process or Business Environment task, not testing a standalone body of AI/sustainability knowledge.

Reflection Question: Recall a recent project decision involving a tool recommendation, a compliance requirement, or a risk register update. Was environmental impact or AI-assisted analysis ever explicitly on the table — and should it have been?
