1.4. Eligibility and the Certification Process
💡 First Principle: PMI gates the PMP behind verified experience, not just an exam pass, because the exam assumes you already have real project-leadership judgment to apply — it validates that judgment, it doesn't teach it from zero.
Eligibility requires one of four combined education/experience paths, all requiring project leadership (not just participation) within the last 10 years:

Experience is tracked in months of leading projects, not project count — overlapping project timelines don't double-count, and routine/operational/administrative work doesn't qualify.
Candidates must also document 35 hours of project-management-specific commercial training aligned to the ECO — active CAPM® holders are exempt from this requirement (the CAPM® itself satisfies it). Books and practice exams alone never count as training hours.
⚠️ Exam Trap: Assuming any professional experience "leading" counts. PMI's audit process specifically checks that you directed projects (owned scope, budget, or team decisions) rather than simply contributed to one as a team member.
