3.5. Vulnerability Response, Handling, and Management
💡 First Principle: Vulnerability remediation is a change management problem, not just a technical problem — the right patch at the wrong time can cause outages, and the right process ensures vulnerabilities are fixed reliably without breaking production systems.
Finding vulnerabilities is the easy part. Fixing them in complex production environments with competing priorities, change management requirements, and systems that can't be easily patched requires process. Organizations that treat "patch immediately" as the universal answer create a different kind of risk: unplanned changes causing outages.
⚠️ Common Misconception: Patching immediately is always the correct response to a critical vulnerability. In reality, patches must be tested before production deployment. Emergency patching of a critical production system without testing can cause service outages. The process (test → schedule → implement → validate) exists precisely because "move fast and break things" is unacceptable for production security changes.
